Venice was designed by tobacco millionaire Abbot Kinney to replicate the feel of Venice, Italy complete with a network of canals and homes and buildings built in Venetian architectural style to spur an American renaissance.  Nearly all of Kinney's dredged canals were eventally paved over after the Venice was annexed in 1925 into the city of Los Angeles. 

Venice, along with Ocean Park were considered the "Coney Island of the Pacific" with rollercoasters, piers, and boardwalks becoming the finest amusement resort on the America's West Coast.

Venice Beach is still a major attraction known for Muscle Beach next to its promenade that runs parallel to the beach "Ocean Front Walk" or just "the boardwalk", complete with tennis courts, numerous beach volleyball courts, and a bike trail.  A circus atmosphere is always present with artists, pedlers, street performers, muscle men, and bikini clad roller bladers displaying their talents and physiques.
